Spitalfields Market

Spitalfields in a covered marketing in central London. Found at: 16 Commercial St, Spitalfields, London E1 6EW. It has been on the same spot for 350 years – impressive right. Who knows when it will re open but wanted to make sure this travel tuesday it was on your radar.

With a whole range of stalls – it is worth going for a walk around even if you are not looking for anything. I found some lovely unique earrings which were like branches. So there are a whole range of different local businesses and local vendors – there are some chain shops in the permanent fixtures around the outside of the market – but that is not why we come to markets right!

There are two reasons I come to Spitalfields – the food and the books. The food is amazing. I could spend all day there eating sweet treats and lunches from all over the world. There is a whole section of the market kept just for the food stalls with old school benches and table to sit at and enjoy your food. There is a whole range of options, from asian, italian, middle eastern through to some of the more ‘traditional’ options. The sweet treats are a must… just be careful with how many to try and get home – they might now survive.

As I said the other reason I go to Spitalfields is the book stall – I love this book stall! There are the traditional reads to some different ones and all at affordbale prices. Around £3-4 a book – always end up buying a few. The choice is endless as you can see from the image above, there are a range of topics and it stretches across all of the stall, there are shelves behind and the owner is just sat on a stall on the outskirts of the stall. Generally they prefer to take cash (this might change) however it is a great place to pick up a new read or something you have always wanted to try.

Until next time 🙂

Mojo Market

Location: Sea Point

Times open: 10 – 10 every day !

This is an indoor market – not the most popular in town during the weekend, but i can imagine during the week at lunchtimes it would be manic!

Mojo market has food galore, again from a range of cuisines, the ice cream is exceptionally good here as well. There are a number of bar too, which have good floor space, so a cold beer with your food, this would be the place to go. I have not seem alcohol freely available at other markets.

Not only food and drink available here as well guys, amongst the labyrinth of corridors there are boutique shops with less of your usual souvenirs, and more African print t-shirt and children’s clothes. Ordinary clothes and jewellery. It is a nice space to walk around with two ATMs at either end of the market and the stalls seem mostly permanent and therefore card is more widely accepted.

Live music is definitely a theme for Cape Town Markets, these places seem to be just ready for these up and coming artists. The audience is quite large and with decent set times – its a gig you would want.

As you can see from the picture above, there is ample places to sit and watch the world go by, there is free wifi here for those who want or need to work. Their is upstairs seating for those that want to get away from the hub bub of below. The cricket was on in the background, no sound but enough to keep an eye on the score if that was your thing. I saw so many families here, relaxing with pizzas and groups of friends enjoying a bit of everything.

It is a good market and to be available everyday – one that I know I will be visiting again.

Oranjezicht Farmers Market

Location: Grangers Bay Blvd

Can even just put in this into Uber and they will take you as close as they can get – the parking lot outside. It is convenient near the V&A Waterfront.

When: Saturdays and Sundays: 9am – 2pm. (3pm on a Sunday)

This is lovely thing to do on the weekends, it is quaint little markets just outside the V&A waterfront. It has some artisan little stores with bags, clothes, sauces, a few trinkets. The major focus of this market is the food. If you walk through based the fish monger, butchers, cake shops, bakery and sauces, you come to a wide space straw covered floor.

This is a fruit and veg market – all done on the number of things or the weight that you buy – cheaper than your local supermarket! It is awesome, it is teeming with people who can help you, traditional wicker baskets to collect all your food, before going to the weigh station.

Beyond this there is a compact little space with food stalls – flatbreads, sandwiches, juices, crepes, spring rolls – so much food. I warn you if you go later in the day it is likely everything will be sold from the fruit to the food in the stalls. The downside to this is that it is busier.

I went when it was a hour or so before it ended and it was still amazing. So much stuff there regardless, the choice was limited as to what was available still. The brownies are incredible and the brie and bacon sandwich from Brie on Bree Street just perfect! The next time I went I had a smoothie with a cheeseburger – so filling! Followed by brownie again – what can I say.. I’m an addict.

Woodstock

Not the festival. Sorry about that.

This is an artisan market on Saturdays in a little district of the city.

Food, clothes, bags – you name it! You walk in to live music under a tent, walk through into an old warehouse and your senses are confronted with everything you can imagine. Smells and tastes. Food from all over the world. Korean, Sashimi, Shwarma, Burgers, Salads, Mac n Cheese, If they don’t have it I would be surprised. There are bars there as well, smoothies, juices, beer, wine, cocktails you name it!

I had spring rolls but that was the tamest option. I will be being more eventful next time. Andre has a vanilla and apple drink which was so good. We all shared food except me, who ate her 3 big spring rolls so quickly i couldn’t share. I had food envy – i will admit now. Andre’s burger and Francine’s salad looked incredible!

We then walked through some of the stalls and shops selling shirts, belts, books, little bits of jewellery to Cocoafair – HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Chocolate shop, R40 for each bar, or small bars for R20. R100 for 6 bars and a gift bag. There are little tasters in front of each of the bars so you can try before you buy.

I would be surprised if i am not there every Saturday of my trip, it is inexpensive, R65 for 3 big spring rolls. Always going to eat something different or listen to different music. Just an amazing little place in an Old Biscuit Mill as well!

Just so unique, Uber to get there from where I am, but i would probably recommend Uber regardless just because of the places it goes through even looking out of the window looked a bit on the rough side. Woodstock itself i quite trendy with Graffiti art on the walls though the little streets. Easy to get around and just a lovely different thing to do on a Saturday with friends.
